Eight common problems and solutions for tailings dams: 9 out of 10 mines encounter them!

Issue 1: Slope Instability
The design requirements have not been met; the slope is too steep, making landslides and cracks extremely likely. The mine must first construct and stockpile according to requirements. Measures must also be taken to reduce the slope, ensuring stability while installing a slope monitoring system for continuous monitoring.
Issue 2: Failure of Seepage and Dewatering Facilities
Failure of seepage and dewatering facilities can cause the phreatic line of the dam body to be too high, leading to swampy conditions in the dam body, causing seepage and collapse, and insufficient stability. Mining enterprises must strengthen seepage monitoring and maintenance and management of seepage facilities to lower the phreatic line of the dam body and avoid swampy conditions.
Issue 3: Excessive Reservoir Water Level
Excessive reservoir water levels, insufficient safety height of the dam crest, and insufficient safety dry beach length, some even using subsidiary dams to block water, may lead to flooding and dam failure. In such cases, the mine needs to set up drainage ditches in a timely manner and construct strictly according to design specifications.
Issue 4: Failure to Strictly Control Reservoir Water Level
Mines should strictly control the reservoir water level to meet the design requirements of the flood control reservoir capacity. The constructed reservoir area must also have flood storage capacity, and the drainage channels in the reservoir area should be regularly dredged.
Issue 6: Tailings Dams Beyond Service Life
For tailings dams that have exceeded their service life, professional design units must be engaged to conduct assessments and design for heightening and strengthening beyond the service life, and safety technical measures must be implemented strictly according to the design requirements.
Issue 7: Damaged Environment Around Tailings Dams
Illegal mining, unauthorized operations, and unauthorized construction around tailings dams can affect the safety of the tailings dams. In this case, coordination with the local government is necessary to stop the destruction of tailings dams and repair the damaged parts.
Issue 8: Direct Rainfall Erosion of Dam Slopes
Rainfall erosion of dam slopes may lead to tailings dam failure. Mines should carry out vegetation reclamation on the dam slopes to prevent soil erosion and set up interception ditches on the dam slopes to effectively divert the water flow that erodes the dam slopes.
