Raise boring is a crucial link connecting underground mine pre-cutting and blasting and mining. Ensuring the safety of raise boring construction and shortening the well completion cycle are of great significance to promoting the balance of the mine's three-level ore volume and achieving efficient and stable mine production.
Before the introduction of the raise borer, underground raise boring construction mainly used the traditional manual rock drilling and blasting method. Workers needed to operate in ultra-high confined spaces, which not only had a high risk factor and made on-site safety management difficult, but also resulted in low actual operating efficiency.
Dahongshan Mining Company uses CY-R40C a cutting raise borer, a new generation of digital crawler self-propelled raise borer specifically designed for various cutting slot excavation construction. This equipment compensates for the weaknesses in mine raise boring operations. The borer has a “punk” style sci-fi appearance and the “hardcore” strength of being agile and able to cut through rock like mud. Its well diameter is Φ 670mm ,maximum well depth 60m ,and the downward reverse reaming diameter can reach 1400mm, with a depth of 200m 。The total weight of the machine is 24 tons, consisting of a main unit, a cutter head, and a remote control. It can achieve automatic positioning, dynamic plate insertion, color digital display, and wireless operation, greatly improving the accuracy and efficiency of operation, reducing the safety risks of underground construction, and providing strong technical support and safety guarantees for underground infrastructure construction.

Wireless Remote Control Shows its Prowess
Facing the unique hardness conditions of Dahongshan mine rock, the raise borer has shown the characteristics of fast well completion and good quality. The well completion speed is approximately 8 meters / per day, compared to the average of only 2 meters / days for the original manual construction, an increase of 4 times. As of 2023 year 7 month, the raise borer has constructed 11 raises in the underground iron ore area, with a total length of 229.44m . It is operated wirelessly, eliminating the constraints of pipelines used by old raise borers. The entire construction control process is carried out under the safe top plate outside the raise, significantly improving the inherent safety level.
A loading worker who has worked underground for many years said: “Before, every time we had to climb into the narrow and high wellbore to load explosives, every step was nerve-wracking. Now, this high-tech raise borer construction does not require blasting, does not produce toxic and harmful gases, has low construction noise, and produces no dust, providing a better working environment for us underground. Moreover, it has its own crawler tracks and can move independently, eliminating the need for laying mobile tracks, making it convenient and time-saving to use. It is a true underground “mountain-piercing tool”.
